Teachers' Worm Workshops
Worms are great educators! A worm bin is wonderful addition to the classroom to teach biology, ecology, and soil science as well as to enhance school recycling efforts. Teachers' Worm Workshops are comprehensive, professional-level, hands-on sessions in two separate two-hour classes that may be scheduled on your campus after school, weekends, or for in-service days, retreats, or conferences. Each participant receives a Mini-Bin and starter colony of worms, 4 oz. sample of vermicast, and Hawaii Teacher's Guide to Classroom Vermicomposting.

Minimum registration is 5 teachers; maximum 20. The fee is $200 plus $30 per participant for materials. Waikiki Worm Co. is an approved DOE vendor.

Classroom Presentations
One-hour classroom presentations give students an interactive experience in worm science basics and care and feeding of a classroom worm colony. Includes Mini-Bin and starter colony of worms. Each class receives the Mini-Bin owner's manual and "Recycle with Earthworms" stickers and tattoos. Grade level appropriate, preschool to 6th grade, maximum 25 students. Fee $100 for grades up to 6th; $200 for 7th grade and up. A follow-up Harvest Session can be scheduled for an additional $100.

Funding School Worms
Funding up to $500 per year per school is available for Teachers Worm Workshops and other school worm recycling projects through the City & County Recycling Office. Go to their website at www.opala.org and scroll down to Recycling Teaching Partners to download the Recycling Project Proposal form. On-going, no deadline.

A $200 Environmental Education Mini-Grant is available from the Kokua Hawaii Foundation that can be used to purchase worms, worm bins - including the Can-O-Worms system - or consultant services. Click here to get more information and an application for this school year.

Private Worm Workshops
Schedule a special Worm Workshop for your company, club, association, Girl or Boy Scout troop, church group, homeschool group - even your child's birthday party! Speaking of Worms...
Vermicomposting is changing the way we think about garbage and provides an effective strategy for recycling organic waste – worms have revolutionized waste management, gardening, and agriculture around the world. A brief overview of worms, vermicomposting, and what it all means to you makes a fascinating and informative 30 minute presentation for your club meeting, luncheon, etc. No charge.
