Vermicast - "Gardener's Gold"
Waikiki Worm Company specializes in premium vermicast produced from chicken manure feedstock at our facility in Wahiawa, assuring consistency in rich nutrient content and microbial life. Down to Earth Organic Fertilizers
In addition to our own vermicast, we now carry the Down to Earth line of organic fertilizers and soil amendments (no relation to the nearby health food store). Down to Earth is based in Eugene, Oregon where for over 30 years they have been manufacturing a wide range of natural fertilizers using only the highest quality ingredients. We have selected products that will work best with Hawaii growing conditions.

Why Organic?
Because it's sustainable and environmentally friendly! Growing plants organically with all natural fertilizers and soil amendments builds soil and prevents harmful runoff into our watershed and oceans while producing beautiful lawns, blooms, fruits, and vegetables for your family.

What do the numbers on the package mean?

The numbers on each package are the N-P-K rations. N stands for nitrogen-responsible for vigorous vegetative growth. P stands for phosphorus- necessary for production of roots flowers fruits and viable seeds. K stands for potassium (or potash)- promoting resistance to disease and temperature stress.

Most fertilizers will also contain varying amounts of secondary macronutrients- calcium, sulfur, and magnesium- along with trace elements or micronutrients that also play an important role in plant nutrition. .

Why are the organic numbers so low?

To someone accustomed to the higher NPK ratios of chemical fertilizers, such as 18-51-20 or higher, the modest amounts occurring in organic fertilizers may appear inadequate. However, nothing could be further from the truth: organics break down at a slower rate and in the case of nitrogen supplying organic fertilizers, contain insoluble nitrogen which releases slowly with greater effectiveness than conventional fertilizer.

Organics also minimize the possibility of “burning” plants with concentrated chemical supplies of nutrients; they improve overall soil health rather than deteriorate it; encourage soil microbial life to flourish; and reduce the necessity of reapplying fertilizers regularly to maintain fertility.

In long-term reality, since organic fertilizers last longer and release their nutrients slowly, their overall NPK amounts will be greater and more beneficial than what is shown on the label.
